Literary Erotica Anthology: Religion

Religion. Sex. Two highly intimate concepts that deserve to be explored in a single anthology.

For this anthology, we are looking for erotic stories that explore the concept of religion. No other parameters apply other than that every story needs to be literary, erotic, and push the boundaries between the sacred and the profane.

We have a preference for Catholicism—the eroticism and hypocrisy are built right in—but stories involving other major world religions are fair game. We also have a soft spot for erotic explorations of world mythologies.

Think outside the box. Stories involving angels, gods, goddesses are more likely to be accepted than those involving ministers, monks, nuns, priests unless the execution is highly original. We love demons, but we already have enough in this anthology unless you’re able to write a demon that utterly blows us away.

We are looking for stories which emphasize the sensual and taboo. Atmospheric, sensual, literary, depraved. Think Madonna, Florence + the Machine, Lana Del Rey, HozierJesus Christ Superstar. Not Garfunkel and Oates.

Pieces that manage to incorporate the concept of sacrilege will be given priority.

Sacrilege. The violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred.

Genders and orientations are irrelevant. The sex needs to be raw, passionate, hot, and at the story’s centre. Four-letter words are neither required nor discouraged, although we have a preference for graphic lust conveyed through beautiful prose.

As usual, no hard requirements in terms of secondary genres, although stories that have a basis in a world similar to our own are preferred. Traditional romance, science fiction, and horror are unlikely to be good fits, although understated, psychological horror might do well as could science fiction rooted in this world (e.g. Frankenstein).

The stories in this anthology will offend—this is not a submission call for timid writers. Nor is it a call well-suited to writers lacking literary chops—we are not looking for ‘commercial’ erotica. Stories must be driven by complex characters with compelling internal conflicts.

Please read our general submission guidelines prior to submitting. We prefer the erotic to the pornographic and have an extreme prejudice for stories with a literary style—however, hot, passionate sex must be at each story’s core.

1,000-5,000 words, although we’ll consider pieces that fall outside those parameters on a case-by-case basis. Multiple and simultaneous submissions ok. No reprints.

If accepted, pay is 1 cent per word. The deadline for submissions is April 30th 2017. This anthology, however, is already mostly full, and submissions may close early.
